Top 20 Energy Saving Tips

Making a few small changes to the way you use energy could make a difference to your next electricity bill.

1.       Turn appliances off at the wall when not in use. Standby mode still uses energy.

2.       Set your fridge between 4-5 degrees and your freezer between -15 and -18 degrees.

3.       Avoid opening the fridge or freezer door to browse. 

4.       Turn off lights, heating and cooling when you’re not in the room.

5.       Set the hot water temperature to 50 degrees.

6.       If using solar, time your usage to daytime rather than night.

7.       Use fans and natural ventilation as a low-energy and effective way to stay cool.

8.       Operate your air-con in summer at 24 degrees in summer and set a timer.

9.       Run the dishwasher only when full and use the appropriate water level for the washing machine.  Wash in cold water using the shortest appropriate washing cycle.

10.   Use the dishwasher (on ECO mode) rather than washing by hand to save on water.

11.   Air-dry clothing instead of using a dryer wherever possible.

12.   Shorten showers to less than 5 minutes and use a low-flow showerhead.

13.   Consider purchasing energy efficient appliances. Today’s new appliances can use up to half the energy.

14.   Take advantage of natural light through the day and use lamps in the evening.

15.   Switch to LED bulbs which use about 75% less energy and last much longer.

16.   Draught proof your home by sealing gaps around doors, floors, and windows.

17.   Close the curtains. Up to 40% of your home’s heat can escape through windows.

18.    Install external blinds or awnings to keep the heat out during summer.

19.   Put decorative lights on a timer and consider outdoor solar lights.

20.   Insulate your roof – can save up to 20% on cooling and heating costs.
