10 Electrical Safety Tips

Keep you and your family safe with these 10 electrical safety tips:

1.    Safeguard your family from electric shock by installing safety switches on all circuits. Regularly test these switches every three months by pressing the test button to confirm their functionality.

2.    Promptly replace any damaged power points, wall switches, electrical equipment, broken plugs, and frayed leads to avoid potential electric shocks. Avoid relying on tape-wrapped damaged leads for protection.

3.    Enhance safety by installing childproof plugs on unused power points and power boards. These plugs prevent objects from entering power point sockets.

4.    Avoid overloading power points by ‘piggybacking’ adapters. Either install more power points or use a power board with an inbuilt safety switch instead.

5.    Recognize the danger of combining water and electricity; never use any electrical appliance near water, keep electrical equipment away from bath tubs and sinks accessible to children. Switch off and unplug all portable electrical appliances not in use, especially hairdryers, hair straighteners, shavers, etc.

6.    Never touch anything electrical with wet hands or bare feet. Never use a portable electrical appliance or place an extension cord where it could be splashed or fall into the pool.

7.    Minimize risks by keeping power cords and leads out of reach of children's hands and mouths. Ensure electrical cords are not dangling from benches or within your child’s reach.

8.    Educate older children on safe plugging and unplugging practices and how to use household electrical appliances safely. Ensure that switches are in the off position before engaging with electrical equipment. Exercise caution when unplugging leads to prevent damage to equipment, leads, or power points.

9.    Ensure electrical equipment has the Regulatory Compliance Mark (RCM) to ensure compliance with Australian safety standards.  Exercise caution when purchasing online, as equipment from overseas suppliers may not meet these requirements.

10. Do not attempt to repair faulty electrical appliances or do any electrical work yourself. Always engage the services of a licensed electrician.
