How do security cameras work:

In the past two decades, CCTV security cameras have not only become incredibly advanced but also more affordable and available. CCTV stands for Closed Circuit Television, which is a video surveillance system used to monitor and record activities in the area it covers.

There is a choice between a wired and wireless camera surveillance system. Wireless cameras use the home’s WiFi to transmit data to cloud-storage, while wired cameras directly connect to a physical recording device.  A wireless security camera is similar to a webcam, except it can sit anywhere inside/outside your house and connect to your local wireless network as well as the internet. This allows you to keep watch on your house through either live footage or recordings from anywhere in the world via a computer, smartphone or tablet.

Wireless security cameras work through your home internet connection, taking still pictures and/or video (usually 30 seconds or less) whenever movement is detected. You will be notified immediately via SMS or email when there's footage to be viewed.

Benefits of a home security system include:

Deterrent Against Criminal Activity

The most significant advantage is the presence of security cameras can act as a potent deterrent against crime. Intruders tend to think twice when they spot a camera, significantly reducing the risk of break-ins, thefts, and acts of vandalism.

Provides Evidence and Helps in Crime Solving

In the unfortunate event of a crime, security cameras serve as an invaluable resource in providing crucial legal evidence. High-quality video footage can assist in identifying the perpetrators, tracing their movements, and providing irrefutable proof for insurance claims.

Real-Time Monitoring and Remote Access

With advancements in technology, most contemporary security cameras allow for real-time monitoring and remote access. This means you can keep an eye on your property from anywhere in the world, directly from your smartphone or computer, giving you peace of mind no matter where you are.

Reduce Your Home & Contents Insurance Premiums

While security cameras cost money to install, they could save money in the long run. Most Australian insurers will lower their premiums for homeowners with a suitable security system.  Contact your insurer for verification.

Considerations When Choosing Security Cameras:

Choosing the right security camera system can be a difficult decision given the variety of options available. The following considerations will help guide your decision:

1. Camera Quality and Functionality

The quality and resolution of your camera significantly impacts the usefulness of your surveillance footage. High-definition cameras provide clearer images, which can be crucial when identifying faces or license plate numbers. Check for the following:

  • Resolution: Is it high-definition? This will affect picture quality and upload speeds.

  • Night vision: Does it have an infrared LED for night vision?

  • Microphone: Does it have a microphone?

  • Speaker: Does it have a speaker?

  • Movement: Can it pan, tilt and zoom via remote control?

  • Motion detection: What capabilities and restrictions are there?

  • Image clarity: Daytime and low-light quality.

  • Adjustable frame rates: This can be useful for varying the quality and file sizes of recording and streaming.

 2. Storage and Accessibility

Consider how the footage will be stored and accessed. Some systems store footage locally, requiring sufficient storage space, while others use cloud storage solutions. The latter offers more flexibility and typically allows for remote access, which can be a significant advantage.

  • Storage: Is there built-in storage (memory card slot) for saving recordings locally?

  • Monitoring: How can the video be viewed – via web browser or mobile app?

  • Remote control: Does it come with a remote control?

  • Alerts: Are alerts for movement/sound sent Via email or SMS?

  • Extra service costs: What's required for using the camera for streaming? Are subscriptions needed for storing and accessing videos remotely?

 3. Installation and Maintenance

Consider the installation process and ongoing maintenance when choosing a security camera system. Some systems are relatively easy to install, while others may require professional installation. Regular maintenance, including cleaning and checking for software updates, is also essential to keep your system running effectively.  Consider the following:

  • Power: Does it run on batteries and if so, will it take rechargeable batteries? Does it need to be plugged into mains power and if so, how long is the power cable? Can it use power over ethernet cabling (PoE)? An alternative to wired systems is a solar-powered alternative.

  • Networking: Will it work via ethernet cable or is it restricted to Wi-Fi?

  • Mounting: Can it be fixed to a wall or does it just sit on a flat surface?

  • Expandability: Can the system be expanded (and to what extent) with additional cameras and sensors for windows, doors and motion detection?
